This Manual of Style specifies a consistent language and formatting style for Polytopia Wiki.
General
- Be clear and concise.
- Maintain an encyclopedic tone. Use proper grammar and punctuation. Avoid contractions, texting language, and first- and second-person pronouns such as "I" and "you" in the main namespace.
- When more than one style or format is acceptable, one should be used consistently within an article and should not be changed without good reason.
- Respect in-game spellings. For example, "defence" is spelled with a "c", and "Xin-xi" and "Ai-Mo" are capitalized in that manner. Otherwise, any national variety of English is acceptable, although consistency within an article is preferred.
- Titles and headings use Title Case because that is the established convention on this wiki. Spaces around headings are optional and ignored; do not add or remove these spaces in a bot-like manner except to achieve consistency within an article.
- Use the "logical quotation" style in all articles, regardless of the national variety of English used. In other words, include terminal punctuation inside quotation marks only if it was present in the original material; otherwise, place it after the closing quotation mark.
Categories
- All pages should be categorized.
- Category pages should include a brief description of the category and appropriate navboxes.
- The parent category is Category:The Battle of Polytopia Wiki. All categories should be a subcategory of this parent category, whether directly or indirectly.
- For more information, see Categories and Navigation on Fandom.
Links
- Internal links should be used for the first and only the first instance of the linked page in an article.
- To link to a page on another Fandom wiki or Wikipedia, use interwiki links, e.g.,
[[w:c:FandomWikiName:PageName]]
and[[Wikipedia:PageName]]
. - Reminder: The pipe trick can be used in the source editor. When the edit is saved, the link will be expanded and saved as a normal piped link.
- Reminder: To link to a category or image, use a colon, e.g.,
[[:Category:CategoryName]]
.
Templates
- Use templates wherever appropriate. For a list of all templates, see Category:Templates.
- When inserting a block-level template, add an empty line before and after the template in the page source.
Creating Templates
- This information is for advanced editors only.
- All templates should be categorized in Category:Templates or its subcategories.
- Do not add line breaks before or after
includeonly
andnoinclude
tags. To add a line break in the page source, use html comments, i.e.,<!-- [line break here] -->
. - Please use comments to complex template code.
- Templates that use CSS should transclude Template:Uses CSS.
References
- References are the last section of the page. They come immediately before navboxes and categories.
- The use of citation templates is preferred over manually formatted references.
- To produce multiple in-line citations for the same source, use named references.
Footnotes
Add footnotes as follows:
<ref group="note">This is a footnote.</ref> == Notes == <references group="note" />
Terminology
- The term "technology" is used to refer to technology as a collective subject or to a singular piece of technology, e.g., Hunting. The plural form used to refer to multiple pieces of technology is "technologies".
