The Puffer is a naval unit exclusive to the Aquarion tribe. It is unlocked by the Mathematics technology and replaces the Catapult.
The Puffer's drench unit skill allows it to flood any tile it attacks. Uniquely, it is able to attack unoccupied spaces just to flood it.
Strengths and Weaknesses[]
Strengths[]
- Attacking super units. The Puffer can deal a large amount of damage to a super unit without receiving retaliation damage.
- Defending against naval units. It is very difficult to mount a naval attack on a Puffer stationed outside the range of naval units. The Puffer has a longer range than two out of three naval units, so a Puffer stationed inland can deter enemy naval units from staying close to shore or landing on shore without being at risk of attack themselves.
- Sieging cities. Stationing multiple Puffers within range of an enemy city can effectively prevent the enemy from training any units there and attack any enemy units defending the city, allowing the city to be easily sieged.
- Facilitating fellow naval units. The drench unit skill allows the Puffer to flood tiles from afar, granting the Shark and Yelly Belly easier access to enemy territory without compromising the movement of amphibious units.
Weaknesses[]
- Inability to move on land. The Puffer is not amphibious. As such, it is slow to mount inland attacks due to the movement penalty incurred by flooded tiles and the need for other Aquarion units to create them.
- Need for protection. The Puffer is very easily damaged and killed. Furthermore, it cannot deal any retaliation damage.
- Enemy Riders and Knights. Multiple enemy Riders or a single enemy Knight or Hexapod can easily kill an unprotected Puffer.
- Enemy 3-range units. Because the Puffer lacks the dash unit skill, it cannot move into the range of an enemy Catapult, Bomber, or Puffer without putting itself at risk of being immediately killed by said unit.

Trivia[]
- The Puffer was added in the second beta version of the Aquarion rework to replace the Aquapult, an amphibious version of the Catapult, and to implement more flooding mechanics.[1]
- During testing, the Puffer had an orange color that did not change based on its tribe.
- In the third Aquarion rework beta, the Puffer's back was changed to use its current, more saturated color palette. The reason for this change might have been to clarify if a Puffer is active or inactive.[2]
- The "bubble" or "water balloon"[1] projectile is unique to the Puffer.
